My Name Is Earl. Earl forces guest star Rosanne Barr into ing a convent.
By Dan Iverson Updated: 17 May am. If there is one thing that My Name Is Earl does better than anything else, it is the way that they handle their guest stars. Various celebrities have shown up, and played characters that were either uncharacteristic or out of the norm for the actors - and this episode is no different.
This week we got to see Rosanne Barr come back to television with an entertaining guest spot where she got to play a nun. That's not a typo… Rosanne plays a nun.
This type of odd placement for the actress is exactly what draws your attention to the show, as you wait to see just how crazy the guest appearance will be. The episode followed Earl as he attempted to kill two birds with one stone by helping Joy and crossing 12 off his list "Made a lady think I was God".
Joy's problem was that she needed to get a couple of restraining orders lifted, to make her seem more personable for her court case, and coincidentally one of the people that she was trying to get the order lifted from was the same person Earl tricked into believing he was God.
The problem is that when Earl admitted to the lady that he was the voice of God, she left her convent and became as horrible a person as possible. In the end Earl helped her realize that they shouldn't be waiting for a from God to be a good person, but that she should be a good person all the time - this sent her back into her life as a nun and all was set right with Joy and Earl's list.
This plot was hilarious, and the fact that it was Rosanne that was causing all the trouble for Earl and the gang made it work.
The only real problem that we had with the episode was that some of the acting and writing was a little dry. As good as Rosanne was, often times it looked as if she was just reading her lines, and not acting into her part. We know that Rosanne isn't a great actress, in fact the reason her show Rosanne was so successful wasn't because of her acting, but the fact that the show was relatable and the humor was taken from her comedy routine.
But this problem is easily overlooked, as the ridiculousness of her character overshadows any sub-par acting. On the other hand, some of the writing was almost too random and odd. We have no problem with slapstick comedy and the occasional jokes that seems to come out of nowhere, but this episode was bogged down at the beginning with a lot of stupid humor that thankfully toned down for the last half.
But, how can we come down on a script that features so much material related to Darnell's pet turtle, Mr. Speaking of Darnell, Eddie Steeples did a great job this week taking what little time he had on camera and taking it over. Even though he was only used briefly, seeing Darnell choked up and crying over the fact that his pet Mr.
Turtle couldn't live in the trailer park any longer had us laughing pretty hard.
Made a lady think i was god
One scene in particular was brilliant; as Darnell was bathing his turtle with a lawn sprinkler, Millie Rosanne came over and told him that turtles weren't allowed as pets - leading to Darnell searching for Joy crying. You don't see men cry very much on television, especially when it comes to matters such as pet turtles - so just seeing Steeples try to keep the tears back in the bar was enough to make the whole episode worth viewing.
As we stated, "Made a Lady Think I Was God" has its problems, and ironically enough the worst part about the episode was also the best.
Rosanne was a welcome addition to the show, and she made for a great guest star, but some of her lines and acting were a little bit sketchy. But criticism aside, her character works in the world that My Name Is Earl has set up, and as such we would love to see her come back on sometime in the future. Was this article informative? YES NO.
